T for Tribes

For #GreenSpacesDictionary and @mumbaismagic I am talking about tribes: the urban tribes we belong to.

One way that many of us discover our city is through the tribe we become part of because of our interests. For example, I belong to the street photographer tribe. I may shoot alone most of the time, but I am part of the tribe.

For some, it could be the laughter club or lifestyle changing habits like Running, walking, cycling, yoga, and similar activities.

Trekking, bird watching and even fishing are some age-old activities that are popular in Mumbai.

What they all have in common is that they are your gateways to the discovery of the city we live in. If you have discovered something about the city over time, there would invariably be a group or tribe that you interacted with or have been a part of.

Art related tribes for dramatics in Juhu-Versova to Ganpati time drummers or Govindas are a tribe. It could be a tribe that makes you aware of diversity like the 🏳️‍🌈 community. Foodies? Marine Life lovers. Dancers. Martial arts. Street dancers. In fact, there are a thousand tribes you can join in Mumbai.

It’s our glue and hope for a better urban common space.
